Chapter I—The Great Sea Beast

“And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his head ten crowns, upon his heads the names of blasphemy.” Rev. 13:1.

Of all the rivers of blood that has ever been dreamed of, this monster of iniquity, surpasses all that language has ever said. Sea means mystery, confusion, danger, commotion, unrest. Stood on the verge of the appearance of the monster Babylon – mother of harlots, religiously.

Sea means thick population, restless confusion. This was the state of affairs as Constantine came to the throne. Now Constantine moved the capital from Rome to Bysantium, on the straight of Bosphorus, some one thousand miles east of Rome. The Roman rulers generally disliked the city of Rome because the citizens generally hated the Emperor. Then he also craved more fame. He changed the name of Bysantium to Constantinople in honor of himself. Here between Europe and Asia was built the greatest city then known in the world. All the great statutes and fine specimens of art known to the world were brought to Constantinople. All the great libraries of the earth, and all the works of art were brought there and set up in this great city to advertise the glory of this great conqueror Constantine that now had a greater name than Julius Caesar. He reigned some thirty years as the monarch of the Romans, and no enemy could stand before him. He first proclaimed religious liberty but as soon as the Catholic church began to lean on him he supported this false religion. Thus he married this mother of harlots, 325 A. D. Speaking of this great monster Catholic church and her relations to the kings’ of the earth we read:

“For all nations have drank of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.” Rev. 18:3.

Constantine claimed that on the night before he marched against the city of Rome and defeated Maxentius, that he saw in the sky a cross, and a reading just over the cross, Saying, “By this thou shalt conquer.” The tale is not believed by the historian Gibbon.

It seems to me that the woman began to flee into the wilderness, about 325, A. D. and so that the 1260 years would run out to about 1585. Well, right along here the pope lost his temporal power over Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Bohemia, England, and part of the Netherlands. Toleration to some extent had sprung up in England, and then the financier left Rome and went to London, others hurried on there and soon London was the metropolis of the civilized world. The christians moved on to England and when persecution began in England against them, they fled into the mountains of Wales.

Rome was the capital of the territory of the first beast, and London is the capital of the second beast, see verse 11in this chapter. In the years about 1585-90, we find the Edict of Mantes that granted liberty to the general Protestants of France. Queen of England was Elizabeth, the daughter of Henry the Eighth, and Anne Boyleen, who was a Protestant. The English Parliament had finally fully pulled away from, the pope, and set up the religion of what is now called the Church of England.

The German government had adopted the Lutheran religion now known as the Lutheran Church, and like England joined the church and state together. The war between Spain and England, destroying the Spanish Armada, was in 1588, and delivered England forever from the Spanish power, and gave England the supremacy of the sea. Columbus had discovered America, printing had meantime been invented, people began to turn from the superstitions of the Catholics, and to show a great thirst for learning. Sea means thickly settled peoples, so this beast rose up out of most thickly settled countries. Western Europe was not thickly settled like Asia. So we see that this beast did not exactly rise at the city of Rome in Italy, but in western Asia.

God Almighty foresaw this thing would come up at Constantinople, and not at Rome. Of course this beast reigned at Rome as well as at Constantinople. “And the beast which I saw was like a Leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion; and the dragon (the pagan Rome) gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.” v. 2.

He received all the strength and aid ‘that hart ever been given to Rome.

This great government of the papal beast is to have all the new power he has gained, and the pagan power of Trajan, Hadrain, Antoninus, and even the Leopard (Alexander the Great) also the Bear (Medes and Persians), and the ancient Romans that were said to be the iron kingdom. Thus the new government started, as one, the like of which had never before been seen upon the earth. It was to run through a dark period of 1260 years. The four universal empires before Christ were illustrated as ugly beasts, because they persecuted the ancient Jews. These two great beasts that we call the first beast and the second beast that rose out of the earth, are nothing but civil or temporal governments that have come up persecuting the church and people of God and hence are called beasts.  God has had no controversy with worldly governments only as they persecuted his people. That is the reason that they are called beasts.

“And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed, and all the world wondered after the beast.” What is this deadly wound? Some think it was the falling away of some of the seven parts of the world that had been supporting the central government, as Egypt or Arabia. But it has been very well settled in my mind that this was the injury by the Mohamedans, who finally took Constantinople from the Catholic world. The Mohamedans pushed on into Greece, Italy, Spain, and even France, and the Catholics would have lost Europe and the awful wound would have proved fatal if it had not been for the celebrated Charles Martel, who met the Mohamedans at Tours in France, and there totally defeated them and killed their commander, and delivered western Europe and most of christendom, from the enemy that would have destroyed the first beast. When Constantine was in the full swing of his power this next verse would well apply to his mighty reign. “They worshipped the dragon that gave power unto the beast.” The pagan Rome was what enabled the new power to get well into the saddle, and they worshiped the beast, “Saying who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him?“

This is plain proof of the mark of the beast—this act or worship of the beast. The unbeliever will naturally worship the finery and greatness of this grand power, while the true believer sees it as a serpent and knows that it is the enemy of both God and man.

God’s children will understand that and remember that some of the ancient Israelites worshiped the golden calf, saying, “This is the God that brought us up out of Egypt.” Which was a horrible lie. God’s people know what it takes to bring a sinner up out of the bondage of sin. And they will not receive the mark of the beast. None of them will be lost, but those who worship the beast or his image (receive his ordnances) shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. “And the smoke of their torment ascend eth up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveith the mark of his name.” How awful this sad warning, that while the true believer abhors the beast and his image or his marks for their hands or their forehead, they will live and reign with Jesus a thousand years. Anything that expresses idolatry is the mark of the beast. Every ordinance of man put up as a religious test is a mark of the beast. “And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.” V. 6. Yes it was blasphemy to say that Constantine had the right to say what men should be made to do in religious matters, and then claim that God set him up to do this work.

He also blasphemed the gospel of Jesus in denying the simple authority of a gospel church of Jesus Christ. The Waldenses said, “what has the king got to do with the church?” Constantine joined church and state, this was spiritual adultery and fornication. “And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them; and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

Now this extensive power that was given to this Bysintinium authority was to last for forty and two months. This is very symbolic.

What is this forty-two months?  It is that same 1260 days that is mentioned in the 11th chapter of this book, and the same 1260 days mentioned in the 12th chapter of this book. Now reduce 42 months to days by multiplying by 30, as this is the average days to the month, and it will give you the same 1260.

So here is my decision on this matter. These three chapters mark out three lines of history that was all going on at the same time. Two witnesses were prophesying in sackcloth, the woman was fleeing into the wilderness with the dragon after her, and this old dragon beast was at the same time operating and running on through a long period that we now call the dark ages.

Indeed it was a dark age, when it was a crime to read the bible, or to preach the gospel only as some sheriff would write you out a license. And then you must preach to suit the pope and priests or you must answer for crime. He was to continue forty-two months, or 1260 days.  All writers use this 1260 as representing 1260 years, which long period is commonly called the dark ages.

At the end of this time this beast is to lose his power. That is temporal power to rule both church and state. This central beast power is to be lost in 1260 years. These seven heads which mean the seven powers of earth helping and cooperating with the great central government, that was for the most part located at Rome, was to finally lose this cooperation. When these governments draw off then the power is gone to force the people against their will, and this is fulfilled in about 1585-90.

Add this 1260 to the 325 A. D. (council of Nice), and it will bring you on to where the German government pulled off from the successor of Constantine, and also where Henry the Eighth, before this had pulled off from Rome, Holland had pulled off, Switzerland had long since pulled off, the Protestants of Bohemia and the Netherlands were struggling for freedom. Charles the Fifth lost out in Germany to a large extent. Elizabeth, Queen of England, William of Orange, Phillip Sidney, the German Protestants, Edict of Nantes, Treaty of Utreht, 1579, Peace of Westphalia at the end of the thirty years war, were the persons, times and influences that fulfilled the 42 months of the beast of this 13th chapter.

“And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear.”

It is a dead certain thing that those who have no love of God in their hearts are the ones who worship the beast and receive his mark in their hand and in their forehead. The real sure enough unbeliever will worship the finery and shows of the enemy—the beast.

The true believer in Jesus Christ will not worship these shows, for they have a bitter twang to the child of God. He cannot relish it. It does not feed him. Those who can feed on these institutions of men and call it the service of God, have the mark of the beast upon them. The names of the true worshipers of God are written in the book of life. “This is the record that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.” If we have an ear to hear, then we are prepared to turn from the worship of the beast. If we have not the ear of faith, we will surely worship the beast and receive the mark in our hand and in our forehead. May God give us an ear to hear.

“He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity; he that killeth with the sword shall be killed with the sword."

Here is the patience and faith of the saints.” V. 10.  Here is the principle laid down that we must through all time reap what we sow.  Solomon says, “He that diggeth a pit for his neighbor shall fall therein.”  Moses said to the children of Israel, “Be sure your sins will find you out.” The secret murderer will sooner or later be overtaken.

Judgment must come to all. There is no one that can in any wise avoid the judgments of God; they are fixed and are sure and certain. The judgment will cover the case in principle if it does not come in the same form as the crime. Joab had shed the blood of war in time of peace, and he died under judgment at the horns of the alter. Abner had gone on to help slay the servants of David after King Saul was killed under judgment, and so the time came for Abner to die. He was killed by Joab, but it was his time to die under the wrath of God for pursuing David and slaying his men. Sam Bass was a great bank robber and killed men to get their money, but he was slain at Round Rock, Texas, as his party was trying to rob the bank.

Let me add a few words about the persecutions under this terrible beast.

It has been computed that fifty millions of Protestants have been killed by the persecution of the Baptists, and put to death for their religious opinions. Well, therefore, might the inspired penman say that at mystic Babylon’s destruction was found in her the blood of the prophets, of saints, and all that was slain upon the earth. To conclude this article: “Who can pursue the account here given without feeling the most painful emotions, and dropping a tear over the madness and depravity of mankind? Does it not show us what human beings are capable of doing when influenced by superstition, bigotry, and prejudice?

Have not these baneful principles metamorphosed men into infernals; and entirely extinguished all the feelings of humanity, the dictates of conscience, and the voice of reason? Alas! what has sin done to make mankind such curses to one another?

Merciful God, by thy great power suppress this worst of all evils, and let truth and love, meekness and forbearance universally prevail! Henderson-Buck. p. 600.

The Inquisition. This was the most wicked institution for the killing of heretics. “Special courts (independent of local authorities) were established for hunting out and exterminating heretics, and held their sessions in profound secrecy. In seventy years the population of Spain fell from ten to six million. Ency. Brit. 6-3438. “The prisoners of the Inquisition were never confronted with witnesses, but were imprisoned and tortured to make them confess and recant their error.” To such gigantic strides of power did the Inquisition attain, that no one was safe from its fangs. The confiscation of the goods of the victims whetted the priestly avarice so keenly that a man to be guilty only had to be rich. So little power had the Spanish king over it, indeed, that it did not hesitate to accuse them; and long lists are full of nobles, privy counselors, knights, magistrates, military commanders and ladies of the highest birth, on whom these daring priests laid their hands and loaded them with chains and infamy” quoted by Craig, pp. 132-3. Think of thousands of humble mothers and children out into the snow in the midst of winter.

The power of that horrid inquisition was not felt much in those countries where the beast received his deadly wound, but more in the thickly settled parts of Europe. In Spain, France and the Netherlands; it finally became unpopular among the Catholics themselves. They dreaded it. It gave no quarter to either Catholic nor Protestant.

Now the 11th chapter begins the history of the two witnesses and runs to the second coming of Christ; then the 12th chapter begins with the woman clothed with the sun and runs to the second coming of Christ. Then the 13th chapter begins with the history of the beasts and likewise nuns to the second coming of Christ. Here are three parallel lines running as symbols to condense the history of the world into small compasses so that it may remain and run on down through the ages, and from time to time, the good Spirit makes its meaning clean to his poor afflicted children to enable them to be comforted oven the hateful persecutors that take every wicked advantage to increase the grief of the poor servants of Jesus, to the joy of those who have the marks of the beast.

Think of a poor mother tied to a post and her suffering infant tied in sight of this mother, hungry for the breast, and the mother told to become a Catholic and she may nurse this child, and she must sell her Lord to get to suckle the child. Or else she must stand there till the child’s cries are hushed by the frozen chill, and still wait until a strange numbness tells her that her sufferings will soon all be over. Think of finding thousands of these mothers in the Alps mountains dead with their babes in their arms the next day after they were ordered to quit the Waldensen valleys. Will not our God avenge these outrages?

In the mighty reformation from Catholicism, and the governments that supported her, we will see another monster power arise to support Protestantism. And this last or second beast is to run to the second coming of Christ to this earth to be avenged of the beasts and the mother of harlots, and to raise the dead and to restore all things, bring the fulness of the year of Jubilee, and to usher in the fulness of all that the antitypical Sabbath means and to reign forever.

The Two-Horned Beast

“And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.”

If the one before this was the first beast then this may be called the second beast. This beast rose up out of the earth, but the first one came up out of the sea. The first beast came up in those thickly settled countries, and the second one came up out of the earth, that is those parts of the country that was not thickly settled, western Europe. “Had two horns like a lamb.” That is good ruling principles. Horns represent ruling authority, power, laws, etc. England and Germany began to allow the people to have voice in the government. The United States gave the people two good laws. Allowed them to have representation at the seat of government, and England and many other countries began to allow the people freedom of religious worship. These two things were good for the people.

And was a great advance toward true civilization. When England began this the people began to leave Rome and go to London. This made London the largest city in the world, or in Europe or America. People thought that full rights and liberty were now to be enjoyed by all people. But how sure and soon were they deceived. See how it reads: “He spake as a dragon.” Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” We cannot tell always by the looks. But when the fruit comes on the tree then we can tell what the tree is. So with this beast. When he begins to speak then we see what he is.

The second beast is also a dragon. He is akin to the first beast, and he will do the same crimes that the first did. He will persecute just like the first beast. “And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.” v. 12. That first beast had a deadly wound that was healed. The second beast was first seen as Germany and England. These two nations formed state churches and the two governments support churches that came off from and denounced Rome and the pope. The Lutheran church joined in and was supported by the German government, and the Episcopal church joined with the government of England. So these two governments committed the act called in the bible, “Fornication,” and these churches sprang off from this ungodly living. “With whom, the kings of the earth have committed fornication.” Rev. 17:2.

Any nations that engage in persecution proves itself to be connected with the beasts, is denounced by the God of heaven. What right has the government to meddle in the way that people serve God, or whether they serve him or not? They are not serving God in trying to force people to be religious. We can not force people to be religious. It must be by the choice and will of the person himself. These two governments, Germany with Luther, and England with Henry the Eighth, formed new churches off of Rome and hence these two churches ware daughters of the old Babylon, that is called the mother of harlots. The Lutheran church and the Episcopal and daughters of the Catholic church. Also the Presbyterian church likewise came right off from the Catholics. This was another daughter that was brought off by John Calvin. This was a great man like Martin Luther. This brings Switzerland in the general connection of this two-horned beast.

Also Scotland by the work of John Knox, that partook of the nations that were parts of the second beast, that came up out of the earth. This two horned beast does not run simply 1260 years, but to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on earth in the sight of men.” And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth, by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them

that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword, and did live.” vs. 13-14.

What were these great wonders? Constantine’s teachers were much like the Astrologers, soothsayers, magicians; they claimed to be able to interpret dreams and visions, but when Nebuchadnezzer demanded them to interpret his dream, they utterly failed.

They were deceptive prophets and were only pretenders and had good luck if they were not crowded to know for certain if they knew.

The king issued a decree to kill all the pretended professors in the schools of the soothsayers and astrologers, because they claimed to be able to reveal these dreams, but they were false pretenders and could not do any such a thing.

So they were doomed to death. This would legally include Daniel the prophet of God. But was as helpless as these other fellows to reveal a thing like the kings dream unless God would reveal it to him. But God did reveal it to him, and these wicked fellows were saved for Daniel’s sake. So the world is standing today for Christ’s sake. Do you suppose that these wicked liars cared to be grateful to Daniel, who was all that kept them from being killed? Are we thankful to him for whose sake we live, move and have all we have?

So it is with these teachers under the second beast. They claim to do miracles. But this is only a claim. Some people believe these false claims. They can not heal the people but they get people to give them the honor of this great work. Jesus did miracles, but this gift was given to the apostles, but not to the ministry of the elders, that came after them. This claim to miracles grew out of the effort of the rulers to establish the divine right of kings. King James the First, said: “As it is atheism and blasphemy to dispute what God can do, so it is high contempt in a subject to dispute what a king can do, or to say that the king cannot do this or that.” Myers, p 601. The touch of the king was supposed to cure disease, heal scrofula. Some of the teachers under the Protestant rulers claimed to do miracles. But the miracles ceased with the twelve apostles.

What was the image that was made to the first beast? It was setting up of the power of gold and silver as means by which the ministry could convey eternal life to the lost dead sinner. The pope and first beast had claimed the same. The power to compel men and women to worship a certain way was not given up by the Protestants, as was supposed at first. But after Martin Luther had denounced the claim of the pope and had preached salvation by grace he charged the Baptists with heresy for not baptizing their infants. And Luther signed edicts and orders lo have the Ana-Baptists killed because they did not conform to the Lutheran church of Germany.

The government of England on both sides of the Atlantic, persecuted the people about religion. Even the Puritans after they had been persecuted in Holland and England persecuted others, and endeavored to set up a state religion in the American Colonies. Thus we see that the governments under Protestantism used persecution, and thus spake as a dragon to prove it to be the two-horned beast spoken of in this thirteenth chapter of Revelation.

“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads. And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” vs. 16-17. Now what are we to say about the mark of the beast?

There are two phrases of this awful mark. The internal and the external. The internal mark of the beast is unbelief. This has seven phases. Each of the seven phases are opposite the seven marks of the child of God as given by Jesus in the first of Matthew, or sermon on the mount. Jesus begins by saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God.

Then the opposite is those who are rich in spirit. Self righteous. Again he says, “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” The opposition is, those who are self righteous and feel no condemnation for their sins. They do not hunger and thirst after righteousness, but after wickedness. They are not merciful but unmerciful. They are not persecuted but persecuted others and feel to be better than others. Idolatry in expression is the external mark of the beast. The perversion of baptism or the Lord’s supper using gold and silver as equal to the blood of Jesus is a rank external mark

of the beast. The multiplied numbers of expressions of the external mark of the beast will reach to some 666, then shall the end come. When the great Roman generals returned from their fields of battle, they made a most wonderful display of finery, of horses, banners, badges, attractive regalia so that the foolish people worshiped the beast and would say, “Who is like unto the beast, and who is able to make war with him?”

This second beast I count had its existence from the time the governments began to pull off from Rome. These nations of Europe were fairly well united in the general support of the Roman headquarters both in religion and temporal matters. But the church kept on increasing the income of the priests and the bishops, and the cardinals, till the officers did not have funds to run the government. Just like it is to some extent today. So much money demanded by the churches that the money to run the government is short. And it will get shorter as this thing keeps on in the line it is now going. People will come to hate the popular churches as they did in Martin Luther’s day. The officers of the governments became jealous and disgusted at the church of Rome because they wanted everything. So it was not hard to get them to break with Rome, and set up a religion at home that was as good as the Roman Catholic church, for it was the mother of harlots and the abomination of the earth, as saith the scripture. Rev. 17:5. She has corrupted every government on the face of the earth. “For by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.” Rev. 18:23.

And again, “For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her.” Rev. 18:3.

What is the second beast doing today? It is grinding the face of the poor. The Protestant world today are doing what the Catholic world at one once did to Europe, Every nation is getting deeper, deeper in debt every year. Every county is getting deeper in debt, every city, and most of the private citizens are so deep in debt that there is no way in sight to remedy this horrible situation. It will soon be so that no one can pay the interest on these debts. The time of God’s holy wrath is drawing nigh. Who shall be able to stand?

Crime in the United States is worse than any country in the world. The young people have gone wild since the corning of the automobile, the telephone and radio. Idolatry in the churches in the form of covetousness has apparently killed the interest in nearly all the churches. Hate and spite are more generally desired than love, peace, forbearance. O where shall rest be found? Deeper grow the shadows as the hate and spite increases. Evolution in the different churches is growing rapidly.

“And that no man might buy or sell.” The marks of the beast are popular with the unbeliever. So in order to succeed it often becomes necessary to adopt some attractive worldly means to attract the world, to tickle their fancy and draw them to you and your place of business, or else you can not make any money in a public business. Lots of men have been broken up and driven out of business because they would not adopt the popular fads of the day to draw business. More people go to the picture show than go to church, and then pay their way. Suppose the picture show would show free. Then where would the crowd be? How many would be at church? “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for his number is six hundred three-score and six.” And it is the number of a man.” Yes it is the number produced by the wisdom of men. When they have come to the fullness of the iniquity, and all works shall be fully manifested, then the end of the foolishness of man will like the death of a drunken man come to an end. God’s truly regenerated people will be turned from the mark of the beast even if their works are burned up by fire. But every act of truth and worship of the true God and Jesus Christ, will be upheld and not allowed to fall to the ground, for it must be vindicated by the Lord in the judgment, and the acts of disobedience exposed to the glory of his name who made the commandments. Are these to have no vindication? Is disobedience just as good as obedience?

Is our God to be mocked? No. “God is not mocked.” “Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap.” “If we sow to the flesh, we shall reap corruption. If we sow to the Spirit we shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” This second beast still has more or less a union of church and state. We have the chaplains, both for war times and in times of peace. While this is unconstitutional in the United States for them to draw a salary, yet people are not overly concerned about the constitution.

This last beast did not have a woman riding on his back. The first beast supported Rome. The last beast will support all the popular ones, and as there is not room on his back he will have to take autos and airplanes for them.

What is the difference between the great Red Dragon that tried to kill the man child and this beast that rose un out of the sea?

Well, to be sure it is the same Roman Empire, but the dragon is that Herod government with the Pharisees, backed up by the Roman government. That was the dragon that tried to get the child Jesus, and begun the great persecution, by killing Jesus, John the Baptist, Stephens and others. The Roman Empire, as a heathen government, opposing both Jew and Christian, kept up their persecution till the days of Constantine.

Here the whole government changes. Constantine began to favor the Christians. Constantine’s father told him to quit persecuting the Christians. That they were his most trustworthy soldiers. Constantine got into the saddle as main ruler about A. D. 313. Then he proclaimed liberty to all Christians, they were all turned out of prisons, and their property restored to them.

But now watch the rise of the Sea Beast. The preachers got into a fuss and got Constantine to call a church council at a town called Nice, just south of the Black Sea. This council met in 325 A. D. and Constantine drawed up his army around the building and ordered all preachers to accept this council’s work. Here church and state, under the great Constantine, made this government a beast. What right had the government to step in to decide church matters? From that on you have the Catholic church in power, getting the government to help them force their doctrine on the people. Kill them, strangle them, burn thousands at the stake, put them in prison. But now the government claims to be protecting religion, the Christian religion, at that. But when did Jesus say for any government to force the people to be religious?

Now Constantine’s government had seven heads and ten horns. What are the heads? The seven different small governments of earth were drawn in with this new power to support it. Greece, Arabia, Assyria, Germany, Gaul, Italy, Egypt, with their dependencies, all joined in this new move to set up the Catholic religion over the then inhabited earth, unless we exempt China and India. But here is a seven-headed Beast ruling with great authority and power over the world, dictated and regoverned by a corrupt church.

Constantine came to the throne of the Roman Empire 316 A. D. His father died in Great Britain and left Constantine with the Roman Army. But Rome had other armies and generals that were jealous of each other! For each of them wanted to rule the world. To be ruler at Rome then was to rule the world. Constantine fought against his enemies until they all went down. He never was defeated in battle. His father taught him that it was not right to kill the Christians. Many of them were his best soldiers. They had become numerous.

Constantine claimed that he saw in a vision a cross in the sky, and read the words near it like this: “By this (the cross) thou shalt conquer.” He made the people believe it. Constantine had the speed of Alexander the Great who was called a Leopard. He had the fierceness of the Medes and Persians, who were called a bear with three ribs in his mouth. He had the strength of the Baylonians, which was called a lion. It was said of him and his army, who is like unto him, and who is able to make war with him. He blasphemed the God of Heaven, when he opened his mouth more than Mohamet did. For Mohamet did not confuse Christianity with the secular power. The Roman Government under his start continued for 1260 years and the temporal power was more or less under the immediate influence of the central bishop at Rome (Pope), until the times of Martin Luther, Queen Elizabeth, Prince of Orange, John Calvin, Philip Sidney, Edict of Nantes, Treaty of Utrecht, and the Thirty Years War.

From about 1580 to 1590, all these events came along. The council of Nice under Constantine convened in 325, and 1260 years after that puts us to 1585. Here is about the time that the main seven heads of the former Roman Empire were broken off. So far as temporal power is concerned. The following governments were under Constantine: Egypt, Arabia, Assyria, Greece, Germany, England, Netherlands. Then by 1585 all these: Denmark, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, England, Assyria, Egypt, Turkey, and other portions, had thrown off the power to rule them, located at Rome.

Now around this man Constantine centers more of the Book of Revelation than any other character in history, his father’s name was Constantus. He was a good heathen man. He opposed the persecution of the Christians.

As Constantine began to rule the Roman world there came a change and a revolution in society, such as had not been since the Hebrew, Moses, led the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. Church and state again united. A class of people that had been considered only as out-casts of society, slaves to the ruling powers, hatred and pursued and used as food for the wild beasts of the amphitheatre—suddenly this very class have all opposition taken off of them and they begin to fill high places in government and the preachers receive salaries and are elected to Episcopal Dioceses.

Their mind’s were affected by this exaltation like King Saul. They soon began to feel their superiority. The preachers began to set up bars, so as to catch other preachers in a tight. Divisions began to occur, for people will take sides.

Constantine the Great called them to have a great council to get united, for he wanted no divisions in his government. They met at the City of Nice. South of the Black Sea in Asia. Here is where the church and state began to work together. It worked for 1260 years, until these countries that met in this council were pulled away from Rome. Here in Asia were the thickest settlements of people in those days. Here are the many waters where the Whore sitteth, she sat in this council of Nice.

Western Europe was not thickly settled then. But in 42 months of 1260 days (years) Western Europe was no doubt thicker than in Asia Minor. The territory of Constantine were depreciated by the rise of Mohammedanism, and this deadly wound was largely healed by the emigration to Middle and Western Europe from Asia and Egypt.

Constantine’s Government was overthrown at Constantinople in the 15th century, but long before this it had lost its power and prestige and the real Rome was still at Rome, from which the world had been practically ruled from 190 Before Christ to 1585 After Christ. This shows that Constantinople was only one of the heads of this seven-headed power, whose main rally point was the City of Rome, which is the city that reigned over the Kings of the earth for 1775 years.

Constantine was a curious man. One of the most doubtful characters of history. He had the same power at the City of Rome as he did at the new capital, Constantinople. This was where he moved the capital of Rome, and the name was so given in his honor. He fought and overcame his brother-in-law here in this place, which was the last enemy which was overcome. He afterwards killed his own son, Crispus, and his wife, Feausta. It was claimed that he found his son guilty of treason and his wife also. But that of his son, was proven afterwards to be a mistake. Constantine reigned 31 years and did more to raise the Empire than any ruler that ever ruled Rome. Yet he did more to ruin and destroy it than any other man, when he joined church and state, and sat up a source of corruption to the ministry worse than paganism, heathenism or Mohammedanism, Zorastrism or Ateshism. His government is the great sea-beast; sea connects with the many Waters that the whore sat upon.
