Chapter IV- Opening of the Seals

"If I have told you earthly things, and you believe not; how shall you believe if I tell you heavenly things?" Jno. 3:12.

"And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were noise of thunder, one of the beasts saying, come and see. And I saw, and beheld a white horse; and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him; and he went forth conquering, and to conquer."

Here the Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ is seen in his mighty work that he came to do. This horse as white is to represent the purity of the conquering gospel that Jesus sent into all the earth. This announcement of the beast shows that when God is preparing his people for a great work or blessing, like the giving of the law at Mount Sinai, that it is accompanied by some striking event in nature, that will call the attention of the people to prayer and solemn study.

On this kind of occasion our attention is called, as if some one said, "come and see." The sun was turned into darkness, the moon into blood, and the veil of the temple was rent in twain, the rocks were rent. Then on the day of Pentecost, there was a most solemn display of strange things. So to my mind these natural things, which make up the beasts or living creatures, were saying come and see. All nature advertises the wonders of God, and they say to us come and see God in the trees, and in the grass and in the water and in the thunders and in the clouds and in the sun, moon and stars. Look how the tree represents the power of the living Christ, that was dead but now ever lives to make intercession for us. The body of this tree holds up every limb and every leaf and all the fruit, so Jesus holds up all his church and every member is lifted up from death and darkness to show forth his praises who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Come see Jesus in the roots of the tree which is as much a part of the tree as the limbs above the ground. So Jesus was under the law like the roots are under the ground, and Jesus was as vitally with the people of God under the law with Moses as he is today with his people in service and blessings. Come and see Jesus in the sun which is one of the beasts in the figure. See how its light is exalted above all. How he drives darkness before him. How he can reach over mountain and dale and across the wide briny waters and send on his light, without man's help.

The opening of the first seal is to show us the pure clean gospel as the power of God and conquering like the old prophet said: "For as the rain and the snow cometh down from heaven and watereth the earth; so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth; it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please and prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." So this is the gospel of Jesus like a man with a bow riding on a white horse.

This bow represents the arrows of the gospel of God when he is with his poor weak servants. The bow is the thing the hunter used in the shooting of arrows at the game, to bring them down.

The power of God in the hand of the blessed Christ is to send out his word as a fire shut up in the bone. "Go teach all nations, was not said in vain. God gave gifts unto men. And as these were sent out, the word of God ran and was glorified. Jesus said: "As my Father hath sent me even so send I you." Then it was not to be a failure. For the sending of the apostles was to be like the sending of Jesus into the world. There was to be no failure that hung on dollars and cents. Notice now how it reads: "A crown was given unto him." What about this crown? This was to be given to the ministry. Paul says: "And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. Therefore so run." "If a man strive for masteries, yet he is not crowned, except he strive lawfully." 1 Tim. 2:5. The twenty four elders had on their heads crowns of gold. This is some great honor to God's called and sent ministry. Paul said that God would give him a crown of glory, and John said, "hold that fast which thou hast that no man take thy crown." Rev. 3:11.

And again, Peter said to the elders: "The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder. Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind." And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." The Lord our God has given a crown of glory and honor to his children and they are to hold fast till he comes. This is associated with the preaching of the gospel. Dr. Watson of Nashville, Tenn., regretted in his last clays that he had not given more time to preaching Jesus.

"And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast (or living creature) say come and see." Rev. 6:3. What is this second beast? It is more than likely a second order of natural creation, that is higher than the lowest, or mineral kingdom. The growing vegetable kingdom in nature speaks in louder tones than the mineral kingdom does. The sun, moon and stars, and the rocks are of the mineral kingdom, and they were wrought upon when Jesus died on the rugged cross. This was a mighty summons to the people to come and see.

You could not come if you did not have life. Neither could you see if you did not have life and sight. So to those who can come and see and hear what the Spirit sayeth unto the churches, there is a message of instruction and comfort that they might walk, O Lord in the light of thy countenance. There are some startling announcements in the vegetable kingdom that ever says, come and see. Come and see that man has never yet been able to destroy the identity of wheat. This seed bread that God made in the Garden of Eden is here yet, and from that first grain there has come millions of bushels that have fed the nations, and kingdoms for six thousand years, and this same grain yet produces its like in the earth as God ordained in the beginning.

Take the cattle that God created in the beginning and they are still beef to give food to man. The effort to prove the new breed called the "cattleloo," developed from the cow and buffalo, and will not breed, but goes dead in the second combination proves that God is not mocked, that evolution is a lie. Come and see the mighty works of God in nature that they prove his intelligence that far surpasses all the arts and inventions of man a thousand-fold. Man is the same creature that God made him in the garden, only he has sought out many wicked inventions.

There has always been cattle, there has always been wheat, and so I believe there has always in like manner been men and women on the earth. Come and see that God has never left himself without a witness in the earth. Come and see how God rules over all things, so that the Jews could not crucify the Saviour till he withdrew his restraint. They would have had no power at all against him unless it were given them from above. Come and see the hand of God that brought Peter out of prison and bid him go speak to the people.

"And there went out another horse that was red; and power was given to him to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another; and there was given unto him a great sword." Rev. 5:4. This is to run with that dragon and beast, that was allowed power to blaspheme God, and to kill the saints, and fill the earth with violence. The red dragon was pagan Rome. That is Rome before it claimed to be christian. After it claimed to be christian it is properly called papal Rome, for then it came under the pope. The age of darkness after Christ here set in. This corresponds to the pouring out of the second vial.

For the Second church Smyrna, and the second trumpet and this second seal, all run parallel. Indeed there are seven sevens that seem to run parallel. Seven times seven is forty-nine, and then the next is fifty, the typical jubilee, or millennium. It takes seven to make a complete fullness. The ancient Jews were to observe every fiftieth year as a great jubilee. In this year every criminal was turned loose, every one that was in jail came out free, and every one's land that had been mortgaged was restored as his inheritance. It was a year of joy and gladness, so that the mighty trumpet of the final and full attainment of all that was meant for Israel did come to them. So also in the day when all the types and figures have all been fulfilled, there will come the holy, full and complete Sabbath and jubilee in which i the mighty trumpet of full and final deliverance will be blown and then all the meaning of both creation and redemption will be fully manifest.

But now we are here on the second seal. The powers of nature call us to come and see. Jesus raised the state of society from a low deep bog hole up to a high mountain, while he was here, but it soon began to run back to the slums of shame, ignorance and idolatry and murder and every crime known to the decalogue. Come and see how low man runs when turned loose from the hand of God. Come and see how boasted man puts ignorance for wisdom. Come and see how that when 'the light which is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness.

The gospel during the first three centuries had spread over Asia, and most of Europe, and in many places idolatry had been broken down by him that rode on the white horse. And as Constantine came to the throne the thing changed.

"And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse, and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see that thou hurt not the oil and the wine."

Come and see when all food is gone and when famine stalks over the land. Come and see when death in a thousand forms is coming upon humanity. Still going down hill from the time of Christ on the earth. God sends his famine because the people run greedily into shame and falsehood. The pair of balances in his hand shows famine, sorrow and hard times among the people, because of the devastating wars. God also sent famines among the people, because of their crimes. The expression three measures of barley and one measure of wheat for a penny, shows that food is to be scarce among the people so that unless the hand of God specially intervenes, that nearly all the people would starve to death, so terrible were the awful wars and destruction of property. From the third century on, the wars became more and more as some thirty tyrants of Rome killed each other in their vain efforts to be rulers. How low man sinks when once he starts down the hill of vice, war and all other crimes against society. I will not put in much space quoting the history of the wars, although I have abundant testimony showing the full roll of bloodshed over the Roman Empire during the fourth and fifth century. This third seal is along the general line of the third trumpet and the third vial and all the other parallel things that run in this book of Revelation.

"And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, come and see. And I looked, and beheld a pale horse: and his name that sat upon him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with the sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth." Rev. 6:8.

This sets forth the lowest pitch to which the people went into degeneration, shame and crime, and sets forth that during the darkest part of the dark ages, from about 759 A. D. to about 1400 A. D., that the earth reached its lowest depths of horrors.

The above description as a symbol shows how low this animal called man can get when left to himself, and shows where he will go to when left to the flesh. One said, "What is man that thou art mindful of him?" Why should God the Holy One visit him with grace to bring him back? But this is mercy and hi plan. False Christianity is worse than Heathenism. Think of the helpless people that have been cast into dungeons of filth, without regard to age, sex or condition, With vermin, worms and corruption, disease of every known variety, and left there to suffer ever kind of indignity with criminals. The purest ladies, and little children, in starvation till life goes out, and disease breaks out by contagion even upon those that considered themselves safe from the loathsome monsters of hideous diseases.

When the two witnesses were called up to heaven, and the world left without these needed influences, that wicket men had caused to be taken from the walks of men in society, then the depths of the bottomless pit of ignorance was the condition of man. Thus it began to be in the days when all there was of the gospel on earth was hid in the Alps mountains. When in the pouring out of the vials of wrath the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters, and they became blood. Then indeed was all learning and teaching shut off from the human race, darkness covered the earth and gross darkness the people. What little learning there was left was back in the mountains and Waldensian valleys. Ignorance in its full measure brings on crime, hate, spite, emulation, strife, fighting, war, bloodshed, cruelty, falsehoods, deception, vengeance, death, and hell in the sense of the foregoing scripture. While up in the valleys the women could repeat much of the bible by heart, and so could many of the children.

The light of the true candlestick was among them and they prayed and sought for knowledge and the Lord heard and answered their prayers, and they had light, and knew more about the book of Revelation than all the schools of higher learning and universities of today. Why is this? Because since the Reformation there has come a reaction and we are on the road back to the dark ages. Men are being steeped in ignorance and self-righteousness, pride, disobedience to parents, without natural affection.

"And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held." Rev. 6:9.

God has set a crown of glory and honor to and for every one of his saints that are called to suffer death for his sweet lovely truth. Not a single line of God's truth shall be allowed to go forgotten or unhonored. It is kept and reserved for a great  revelation. Saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain. They could not slay the soul, but could slay the body. The body goes back to the dust, but the spirit goes to God who gave it.

This no doubt has reference to the suffering church in some sense, that are being slain for the testimony of the truth, and shows that they had been held for a long time in this state and that the time is drawing close when their prayers for deliverance must be answered. They had been under this terrible strain so long that it looked as if none would be left to survive, and they were given the prayer of faith which is now to be answered. John Wickliffe in England, and John Huss in Bohemia, Peter Waldo in France with the saints that were with them had been given the prayer of faith as their spirits went home to God. Study the lives of these three great men for they deserve more honor than Martin Luther, for they made it possible for Martin Luther to do what he did in the sixteenth century.

"And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?"  Verse 10. There were many that must go down, since they sided with King Signsmund of Germany. Although Signsmund had promised Huss a safe protection if he would come to the Council of Constance, yet when Huss arrived at the Council, he at once put him in jail, and proceeded to try him without allowing him any defense or witnesses in his favor, and burned him at the stake in 1415, A.D. About a year later, they also burned Jerome of Prague. A war of extermination of their followers immediately followed. How long O Lord, does it take to avenge the wicked murder of these thy poor suffering saints and ministers? It is righteous that God should give them blood to drink. But the time was drawing near now for the church to come up out of the wilderness leaning on her beloved.

"And white robes were given to every one of them; and it was said unto them that they should rest for a little season, until their fellow-servants, also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, Should be fulfilled."

Here is foreshadowed the Reformation, or the relief that is appointed for the church and the ministry, as the Powers of persecution was removed from the governments of Europe. Germany became more tolerant and so did Switzerland and England, and the low countries of the Netherlands. The light began to spring into the minds of the people. They were tired of persecution. It had a curse to education and all true learning, and had caused the earth to flow with the blood of God's people, and had filled the earth with violence. The church of God has had this rest, and now they will no doubt become worldly minded by the idolatry that is rampant in the earth, and forget the Lord who has done so much for them and fill the earth with the doctrine of the three unclean spirits like frogs till they will be gathered together in the valley of Armageddon, and then the day of slaughter will come and the judgments of God will be poured out to the full. Then who shall be able to stand?

"And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sack-cloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind." Rev. 6:12-13.

Here is a most terrible providential affair. The light of the Sun of righteousness will be withdrawn till it will be like the darkness of a day when there was no sun shining. The church of God will be butchered like cattle in a packinghouse. Thus the moon will be turned into blood. The stars of heaven--the ministers of Jesus Christ, deceived and betrayed will be drawn away from the service of God, by the teaching of the three unclean frogs, and then the end comes. They will not all be drawn away, but in the main they will go away into the confusion of the beast and the false prophet. The heavens rolled away as a scroll, when it is rolled together. Every meeting of the saints for public worship will be stopped.

I believe that this is to all take place just before the time of the end of this age. It further says: "The heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places," v. 14. What is the mountain and island? To my mind, a mountain in the sense of this figure here is a strong government that heretofore resisted all the powers of the world, but now all at once goes down. So it was under Napoleon Bonaparte, nearly all of the great governments of Europe were either overthrown or were so shook up that the tyrannical kings were overthrown or put out of office, and a new form of government started. At least the desire for a more democratic government was aroused among the people, during the great wars of Napoleon that they were all changed to some extent. France was changed from a kingdom to a republic, and England and Germany changed their form of government several times.

And now what does it mean when it says that every island was moved? It is land out in the water, and this water represents false religion, and is a kind of a government of designing men set up in the church. When God gets hold of this human institution, that men have put into his churches, it must sink. So when the powers of darkness began to get shook up by the great reformation, and further by the French Revolution, and the wars of Napoleon, there was started out a movement that is yet affecting the powers of Europe.

"And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bond man, and every free man hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains. "And said to the mountains and the rocks, fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?" Rev. 6:15-16-17.

The mountains and the rocks above referred to are the very ones in which these men tried to hide, while in it they received the mark of the beast.

In the book of Revelation, there is a series of seven running through the entire book. This sixth chapter which mentions the opening of the seals, has a beginning with Christ and the apostles and runs a lesson to the end of this age. The seven churches, or seven candlesticks may be regarded as seven ages or periods traveling from the days of John the Baptist and Christ, on to the end of the church period, and to the second coming of Jesus Christ back to the earth. Now take the seventh chapter, that speaks of the sealing of the 12,000 of each of the patriarchs of the Old Testament, then of the mighty host of the New Testament day.

These were before the throne and the Lamb, and they were clothed in white raiment, and robes, and palms in their hands. And the elder said to John, "What are these which are arrayed in white robes and whence came they? And I said unto him, sir thou knowest. And he said unto me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them." Rev. 7:13-15. This chapter is to point out to our minds, so it seems to me, that those that have come through great tribulations, persecutions, burning at the stake, and killed in every form that wicked devils could devise, that not a groan of misery or pain shall evil be forgotten, but shall be remembered by that faithful husband, and he will finally turn it to golden sparkling jewelry for his beloved church that has suffered for his sake.

"Blessed are ye, when men shah revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you." Matt. 5. Will there be any failure to give to those poor old servants their reward that were sawed asunder, cut to pieces, cast to wild beasts, their flesh flayed from their bones, heads chopped off, suffocated in caves, starved to death, women shamed defiled, butchered, and even their babes left in sight dying with hunger, and the mother tied to prevent her from nursing the child. Hanging women up by the heels and laughing at their plight, and in all this claiming that they are doing the will and holy service of God. Did they believe it? It must be brought to light, and will be in due time.

Now take the eighth chapter of Revelation, and see here are seven trumpets. This will show, from the second verse, for the first verse should have been left with the seventh chapter. "And I saw seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven Trumpets." Then comes the incense, and the prayers of the saints that is to go with the preaching of the gospel. This giving of the great Holy Spirit to the early witnesses, as far as the gospel should go.

Here is another symbol of the preaching of the gospel. Seven trumpets. The blowing of the trumpets under Moses was a figure of the preaching of the gospel. This is synchronous with the other sevens running through this revelation from Jesus Christ. It tells of other things from a different standpoint that were not mentioned in the history of the world under the seven seals.

These figures run parallel with the seven seals. The eighth, ninth, and tenth chapters, run right through till the seven trumpets each one is sounded, and again that brings us up to the close of this present age.

Following each of these trumpets there seems to be the judgments of God upon the inventions and idol institutions of men that are in competition to the one institution that Jesus set up for the real good of mankind. This institution of Christ is rejected of man, and the Lord, however is going to hold it up by super and extra power. Do you believe it? Or do you believe that the gates of hell will prevail against it? When the first angel sounded one of these trumpets, there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth, and the third part of the trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up." This is figurative and shows that the ordinary supplies from nature were to be burnt up, or dried up. Famine as seen in the judgments under the seals. Then this second angel sounds, "and a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea." What is this mountain, and what is this sea?

The kingdom of God to break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms and to stand forever. This Herod kingdom was the first to be consumed. Burnt as in the figure, and as it was burning, it is to be cast into the sea. Sea means in this case as in others, the Roman world, of pagan, idol religion. So it happened. This mountain took fire under the vengeance of God against the Herod government that crucified Jesus, killed the Son of God, and blasphemed the Holy Ghost. The Jewish commonwealth went down and was cast into the sea of the Roman Empire. The fish and the ships were destroyed. The inhabitants of the Jews, their institutions, their mode of life and living were changed by the Romans.

"And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and on the fountains of waters. And the name of that star is called wormwood; and the third part of the waters, became wormwood, and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter." 8:11.

What can be this star that fell from heaven that is called wormwood? This was not Julius Caesar, for he did not come from heaven, (church). Then his day was already past.

This star that fell from heaven (church), was Cornelius, whose party Constantine espoused. Cornelius was the first Bishop at Rome, 250 A.D. The great majority of the members of that church followed Cornelius instead of Novatian, because Cornelius believed in taking anything into the church, and then all classes joined the church to be on the popular side of things. That is the way it is today. His doctrine tickles the wicked, but is bitter to the child of God. The Cornelius doctrine was to suit the great Roman ruler Constantine, which now turned in favor of this spurious religion. Many of God's children died on it, till they learned not to eat it. It did not kill them eternally, but it led off after strange notions after the world. From this start here with Cornelius, we find the manifest beginnings of the origin of the Catholic church.

Here is its beginning in history. Here was a sea of false religion by which the world has been deceived, for all nations have drunk of the wine of her fornication. False teaching--in this awful sea, many have drowned. And out of this sea the greatest monster on earth arose, for he had seven heads and ten horns, and crowns upon his ten horns. And this great terrible beast is the Constantine government of the thirteenth chapter of the book of Revelation, and is the next to the most important thing in this book for wonder and astonishment.

How ignorant is that poor deluded soul that will fall down and worship a man. God is the only object of true worship, and the worship of other things brings a snare and death, and filth and corruption. When the fruits of the Spirit are not seen and the works of the flesh begin to show themselves, then crime and the judgments of God are fast ripening. What was this strange star that fell from heaven? It is bound to be some great influential teacher or preacher that fell away from the truth, and took up with the institutions of the world. Satan was cast out of heaven into the earth. This was done during the personal ministry of Jesus here in the world. As he was casting out devils and setting up his mighty kingdom that was to destroy the one that went before it, he said, "I beheld satan as lightning fall from heaven." That is unregenerated men, were rejected satan was cast out of his people, and then none but regenerated people had a right to church membership in this gospel kingdom.

Cornelius was a strong preacher at Rome, and he began to argue that any person could go out of the church and commit any crime, worship idols of the heathen nations around them and return. There were some that opposed this. The doctrine of Cornelius was bitter to the humble children of God, and it was bitter to them to the extent that it is said that this star was called "wormwood." Yes the teaching of the popular party in Rome was bitter to the church, because it brought on a division. This star was said to be in heaven. Yes, that is he was in the church, but fell from heaven, and is in the line of the identity of the Roman Catholic church, which is a false church. Thus we see the rise of Modern Babylon, the Mother of Harlots and abomination of the earth. (Like a fallen woman).

Now this monster of iniquity, Babylon, rose at the same time to full manifestation that the beast rose out of the earth. Notice too, that it is said that this star was as a burning lamp. Yes, he was associated with the candlestick till the full move was made to start up this cup, or doctrine of iniquity. As he was connected with the church, it looked as if it was a lamp falling from heaven. The preacher is supposed to have standing with the candlestick of Christ. Just so today, if some preacher with a paper and several followers go off and get to such a pitch that no orderly people will recognize him. The star falls from heaven.

"And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten and a third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the clay shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitants of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound." Rev. 8:12-13.

This scripture is a forecast of a time of great darkness upon the earth. This is to my mind about the years of 850 A. D. This is just after the reign of King Charles the Great of Germany and France. He and his father Pepin were two of the greatest kings that ever rose up in support of the pope. These were the days during which the church of Jesus was back in the mountains hid from their persecutors. When practical religion is driven from the face of the earth, then indeed we have a dark time. Ignorance stalks over the earth. I want to try to show that this present age is the next darkest to the one under consideration. The sun was darkened. God refused to let the people have helpful light because of their former sins. Thus the sun was darkened. Then the moon was partly darkened. Yes the church was driven to the wilderness and the good reflex influence that comes from the church is lost. And the stars became darkened. Yea, the true preachers of pure truth of God and heaven, were run out of the country. The stars mean preachers. Anti they were not allowed to preach the truth, so the light was very dim. This day that we are in just now is quite dim because, the people are learning to despise the good things that make good citizens and hurrying over the precipice of awful destruction and don't seem to care one whiff what the result will be. The children instead of learning honesty, and to try to make an honest living, are told that the people owe them a living without work. This is what one of our state senators says about it, and he ought to know. Hear him.

"Mr. E. G. Senter in a speech at Granbury deplored the increase of lawlessness in the United States. Every one can see its outcroppings, but no political doctors seem to give the causes. The groundswell of lawlessness is our system of education and teaching, especially higher education. The youths are taught from the beginning of their school career, that education is for the purpose of making a living without hard work, and to have a good time in life. Then the people have gone "hog wild" over higher education. The A. M directors just asked of the board of control the little sum of $9,000,000.00, then the tech wants $5,000,000.00, and all the higher institutions of the state want over $30,000,000."--Dallas News, signed by D. B. Smith, Bonham, Texas.

Crime and ignorance of the common things of life are growing right in these schools. Are our smartest men ignorant of what is going on? Well, many of them know, but it would be unpopular to speak. We are fast hastening to the destruction of our country and of our great government. If God's providence does not soon turn the tide we are ruined as sure as water flows down hill.

When Charlemagne died his three nephews divided up the country and it at once feIl into wars, and the petty divisions of the country, and the suffering of the common people was appalling. So it is fast coming to the rising generation. The pope did not want the people to have opinions of their own, so the people were not allowed to have the bible to read. Now it should be carefully noted that right after a fall into great darkness, a people plunge into war and bloodshed. So we note that our scripture says, that following this situation, it is written, "woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitants of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet that are to follow."

Now we come to the ninth chapter of the book of Revelations. Here we see the awful strange thing of those horrible locusts, the bottomless pit, the black smoke that these locusts came out of, and these two names in Hebrew and Greek, of Abaddon and Apolion. My answer without further waiting is that it represents the wars of the Crusaders in the dark ages. Read the scriptures.

"And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth; and to him was given the key to the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, (smoke means ignorance), as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit." Verses 1-2.

The star that started the awful cruel Crusades was a man called Peter the Hermit. He was the strangest of all strange men. Wanting to do some great and wonderful thing, and he did not know what it was. He opened the carnal mind of the people by preaching that the people ought to organize great armies and go to Jerusalem and take the city from the Turks, Mohamedans. He opened the carnal mind by his most powerful preaching. The bottomless pit that he opened is the carnal mind, with the things that it always ends in--corruption and destruction. What came out of this bottomless pit? Smoke. Ignorance--crime--organized ignorance--marks of the beast, perversion of water baptism and christian good works. Peter the Hermit preached all over Europe that they must come together--organize and send great armies to deliver the sepulcher of Jesus from these infidels. But how much information, light, truth, and real bible duty, do you think was in his teaching? Nothing but smoke from the carnal mind which is enmity against God, is not subject to his law, neither indeed can be. Every corrupt beast and corrupt and false church boiled up out of the carnal mind. Can any good thing come out of it? I say not in the least, but ignorance and bloodshed.

"And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth; and unto them were given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree, but only those men that have not the seal of God in their forehead. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months; and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them."  Do not forget these scriptures as we dig for the meaning.

The locusts came out of the smoke. What is it that might not come out of agitated ignorance? There were some six different armies organized to go some two thousand miles to fight the Mohamedans and to take from them the city of Jerusalem, the holy city. Some of them starved to death on the trip.

One crusade was for the children that were caught mostly by the enemies.
