We hear a lot about Antichrist these days. Almost daily we can hear about him on radio or television. We are taught that some time in the near future, a man, which is the “Antichrist,” will appear and rule the world. Some say he will come from Europe, and some say he will come from the Far East. I know nothing of this doctrine, but I do know that the Bible teaches that even in the first century there were many antichrists, and that there would be antichrist until the end of time.

“Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists: whereby we know that it is the last time.” (1John 2:18) Do you understand what John has said? He said that it is the last time and the evidence to prove it was that antichrist, many of them, were in the world.  John knew that the gospel age or time was the last age in this world, and that there would be no more time after its close. We are still in the last time now.  How much more time we have no one knows but God.

The word “antichrist” by definition means: “an opponent of Christ, against Christ, a false claimant of the attributes and characteristics of Christ.”  Remember John said, “even now are there many antichrists,” hence we learn that antichrist is not one single person, but many, anyone who is against Christ is an antichrist. John proved this when he wrote, “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father:” (1John 2:22-23).  Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, to deny this is to deny the Father, for the Father testified that Jesus is His Son (Mat 3:17, Mat 17:5).

1 John 4:1-3 says, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not That Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.” This is very clear isn’t it, antichrist is here already, and has been since the first century.

An example of the antichrist and the spirit of antichrist is the “Arian” heresy. It teaches that Jesus is not the eternal Son of God, but is the first of God’s creatures, created in time, and elevated to the rank of “a god”. This heresy is an attempt to rebut the doctrine of “The Trinity” by an attack on the second person of the Trinity, Christ the Son of God. “For there are three that bare record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.” (1Jo 5:7, Jo 1:14).
