New Year's Greeting PDF Print E-mail
Written by Moses Denman

Dear Brother Webb: --To you and all the true saints of God, I send greetings of the New Year. And would wish that the life of each one of you may be as free from clouds and shadows as is this bright and beautiful day, without a cloud to obscure the sky. But it would be far beyond our expectations or more than we frail mortals could hope to ever attain to in this life.

Jesus, in speaking to His disciples says, “in the world ye shall have tribulations, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

O, dear saints of the Most High, how comforting are these precious words of the dear Saviour! He could sympathize with His followers in the trials and tribulations, which He knew would beset them on every side.

Dear little weak child, though oftentimes pierced through with many sorrows, be of good cheer, for Jesus has overcome the world, and knows how to deliver each one of His little ones out of trouble.

O brother, O sister, have you persecutions? Jesus was persecuted. Have you temptations? Jesus was tempted. Have you false accusers? Jesus was falsely accused. Have you buffetings? Our dear Saviour received the buffetings of men. Sometimes we have wept. Jesus wept.

Yes, my beloved friends, Jesus has sweetened all of these sorrows, by tasting them first, and showing us how to bear them. We are often bowed and bruised, by grief and sorrow, but if we can feel and say as did the Saviour, "Thy will be done," all our burdens will be lighter, and we can sing, “where He leads me, I will follow.''

Naturally, we dread the afflictions that we are called to pass through in our earthly pilgrimage, and many times would avert them if we could. But this is beyond our power.

"The Lord may sweeten the waters,

Before we stop to drink;

Or, if Marah must be Marah,

He will stand beside the brink."'

When sorrows press the soul, and trials rise on every side, which are to us insurmountable, O then, dear little trembling child of God, if you are ennobled to look to Jesus for help, yes, if you can look to Him, with prayerful heart and an eye of faith, 'tis then that Jesus reaches out His hand and raises the drooping head.

How changed everything is when Christ gives us strength, how sweet that all pervading calm which fills the soul with love and praise, when we can face a frowning world wi.th christian boldness, and while passing under the rod of affliction!

O, then tell me of an unclouded day, where no storm clouds rise.

While I live I want to be more like Jesus, and serve Him better. But O, my soul ! I oftentimes feel that I am so unworthy of the many blessings bestowed on me. I am so imperfect and fall so far short of christian duties, that I am often made to exclaim, "0, Lord, show me thy paths, teach me thy ways." But our worthiness is all of Jesus. I love christians every where, but let my earthly home ever be with the Primitive Baptist church. Our feelings are wounded when we hear a disparaging word about the church or any of the members. Therefore we should ever be watchful and prayerful for the right. O, brother and sister, I ask your prayers, that I never bring reproach to His cause, but that I may be worthy the name of Jesus. And when you meet in church to worship, I beg you to pray for the little weak one, who could not meet with you, but whose heart's desire is to be there too. For such a one, my heart goes out in sympathy and love

Zion, beautiful Zion! My love for thee grows stronger, as thy beauties are unfolded to me! may I ever be found within thy borders!

Dear readers of the Trumpet, may we all be enabled to bear each others burdens in love, and may each one be blessed with the cheering presence of Jesus, is the desire of your sister in hope,  CALLIE (DENMAN) MCGEHEE..

PB-Online and the Primitive Baptist Church do not recognize the ministry of "pastor" Fred Phelps, nor do we have fellowship with the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, which styles itself as an Old School (or Primitive) Baptist Church. We find the actions of these people to be deplorable and against the very Scriptures they claim to believe. Let it be firmly noted that the Primitive Baptists do not and will not endorse, condone or support the base actions of this group.
