Written by Moses Denman

Lord save me naturally and save me spiritually; save me now and save eternally, here and in heaven. For salvation from death in sins and from the many evils of the world is of the Lord. How helpless we mortals are to perform, and how unworthy to receive salvation in any of its varied forms! "Truly salvation is of the Lord." Even when dead in sins, God often keeps the objects of his love from various evils of body and mind. And after saving them by atonement and by regeneration he saves then from wrong doctrine and sinful practice. And, dear brethren, the Lord enables us to trust him yet to deliver, or save, us from ruin. Like the helpless apostle Peter, when about to sink, you are sometimes made to cry, "Lord save me." Then he hears your cry and does save you. "It is God that worketh in you to will arid to do," enabling you to "save yourself from this untoward generation"--enabling you to walk uprightly and not sink into ways of sin and ruin. So watch and pray and be of good cheer. "God is able to make you stand." Oh! I am so unworthy of salvation. Yet when threatened by the raging waves of sin and trouble, my prayer is, "Lord save me." These blessed words have come to me this right with peculiar force and sweetness. Just now I have been saved from a deep wretchedness of soul, which I could not escape. A painful sense of my unworthiness and vileness before the pure and holy God greatly troubled me. Thus was I pressed down in dark gloom and sadness as if by a mountain beyond my power to remove. Then in bitterness of soul I cried unto the Lord with conscious earnestness, "Lord save me." Now Jesus came close to me by his consoling presence, and "in his love, and in his pity he redeemed me" from distress. He removed the mountain of trouble and brought me sweet repose. I desire to praise the Lord for causing me to earnestly pray unto him, and for his merciful answers to prayer. Oh! that men would praise the Lord and pray unto him every day. Amid this joy and gratitude to God for his soul-cheering presence and power to save, my unworthiness began to trouble me again. My desire was increased to be more pure in heart and life; for I felt too impure: to be so close to Jesus. But the comfortable assurance was soon given that Jesus is my worthiness--that the purity of Jesus is imputed to me and recommends me to God. This sweet confidence now came into my soul. With this purity of Jesus as my worthiness God can afford to come close to me a sinner and save or turn me from sins, and manifest his love and let me enjoy his holy presence--and I was so happy. O, how blessed is this gracious foretaste of God's love and mercy! Dear brethren, if the joys of divine love be here so sweet, how unspeakably glorious will be its heavenly fullness.

Lord, may we feel that we are thine,
And sweetly on thy breast recline:
Thy name revere, thy word obey,
And never cease to watch and pray.

May we continue in thy ways,
Delight to pray, delight to praise;
Here with thy saints abide in love,
And share with them thy joys above.

Lord save me with all thy people for Jesus' sake. Lord increase our faith, love and obedience to thee. Dear Saviour, let thy Spirit and the sweet hope of being clothed in thy purity turn us from sin and keep us closer to thee. Blessed Redeemer, grant that we may increase more and more in purity of doctrine and purity of life.
