Written by Moses Denman

These words bring us to briefly consider the Christian Warfare. In I. Pet. ii. 11, We read "Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul." In this war between the fleshly lusts and the renewed soul, we keep under our body or appetites. We obey our Lord's commands; though imperfectly done. Jesus says, "If a man love me he will keep my words." Yes, keep under our body looking to our Captain for strength and Courage. For it is only through Jesus the Captain of our salvation that we shall prevail over our outward enemies and inward foes.

In the affairs of nations only living, strong and active men are taken as soldiers. These must be well drilled and disciplined, loyal and brave.

So also to be soldiers in the Christian Warfare we must first be born again--we must be living, strong and active. And be it remembered, "When I am weak then am I strong.” Next we must be duly drilled or taught the correct principles and practice of our holy warfare.

O brethren, we must be willing to suffer! We must be willing to endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. My brother, do you intend to be plain and humble in all your words and ways, whatever people may say? Are you resolved to obey God by humbly ruling your wife and children in love and firmness in the right? And sister are you willing to deny yourself and avoid being proud, self-willed or determined to have your own way? Are you resolved to cultivate the womanly graces, as meekness, purity and obedience to your husband in what is right? If so you will be a happy man, a happy woman blessed with obedient, pleasant children. If we walk according to the scriptures, we shall be blessed in every way of life.

Oh my friends, when wronged by others we must crucify our pride and not return the evil. When tempted to injure ourselves by doing wrong, we must deny the flesh and obey our Lord. We must be loyal, temperate and firm in duty. Our "Old man," that is the flesh or appetites, must be kept under good control.

Above all to be a good soldier in this drilling and warfare, we must look to Jesus our beloved Captain and obey His commands, even in the face of danger and death.

Dear lover of Jesus, in view of the great love and suffering of Him who has chosen us to be soldiers, let us be sober, vigilant and active in the service of our Lord and Master. Let us duly expose unscriptural doctrine and wrongdoing, and rejoice in the truth and every good work.

We should not seek to excuse any sin by saying I can’t help it, but we should rather "mortify the deeds of the body." Let each believer say, though I am weak and tempted by various worldly pleasures, yet through Christ who strengtheneth me, I am resolved to keep under my body or wrong impulses.

Rejoice every believer on Christ; for sin shall not have dominion over you. Sweet thought, through Christ you shall conquer satan and sin. Yes "We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us," and gave Himself for us.

Thus in loving, trusting, obedience to our divine Captain and Husband, we enjoy "Peace With God through our Lord Jesus Christ." Sweet peace. Yours in love,

McGregor, Tex.       M.D. DENMAN.
