Written by Moses Denman

To me this has been a happy day. This morning I was made happy when early in the field picking cotton. Happy because blessed with health to supply my own necessities and to freely breathe the pure morning air. I was made to rejoice while beholding the beauty of the rising sun, bringing joy and gladness to many appreciative hearts. As the glorious sun arose, I thought of the goodness of God. How cold and dark this world would be without the blessed sunshine! Chilled by the early cold, the welcome sun makes me warm. And the happy thought came that Jesus, our Sun of Righteousness, brings light to our minds, and fills our cold hearts with the warmth of His love. My mind was carried back to the happy day in my boyhood when picking cotton, I first felt God's humbling love and sweet peace in my youthful heart. All things then seemed new and beautiful. All around was peaceful and happy. I loved God and His people and was so happy. Everything was adorned with. God's glow, and all was filled with love and rejoicing. O, wonderful love of God! How unworthy I am of such great love and mercy so freely given to me, because Christ died for my sins.

My brethren—all who love Jesus—like Mary who had much forgiven, I want to be at your feet and wash them; and anoint them with words and deeds of kindness, self-denial, and long suffering. Though I am unworthy of your love, let me love you whom Jesus loves and for whom Jesus has suffered. I am so imperfect. I want you to help me do right. I want you to forgive my wrongs and rejoice with me, for you are more than all this world to me. Rejoice with me in this trusting love and sweet peace with God and with men, that constrains us to obey and makes our souls happy. It is this love of God within that humbles our hard hearts, subdues our pride, and makes us love one another. Let us praise God for His sovereign unchangeable and unmerited love to us, and for our love to Him and His chosen people. Oh, let us love our Lord and obey Him always.

"With my whole heart I love

The God that loved and bled,

Who left the shining realms above

And suffered in my stead."

Pray for me that I may remember my vileness and Christ's imputed holiness, and be led to walk humbly in godly fear.

Your unworthy brother in much love,

Sparta, Tex.         M.D. DENMAN.
