Written by Moses Denman

Although last Saturday was very cold, 10 degrees Far., yet I gladly went to the office to get the Trumpet of Feb. 9th. I opened and read a short expressive piece from Bro. P. D. Gold on "The love of God." O, praise the Lord, it is God who so loves us that He puts away our sin. The Lord our God "hates evil, loves holiness," therefore He has chosen us that we should be holy; but He "will in no wise acquit the guilty." As Bro. Gold has well said, "perfect love has nothing in it but love. It is inexpressible."

We rejoice that the love of God in the heart or soul is the result of the Holy Spirit's work renewing the soul in regeneration. Not that a part of God is engrafted in the soul, but His loving nature--"the love of God is shed abroad in our heart by the Holy Ghost."

My heart goes out in Christian love and encouragement to Bro. Kirkland when He says "CHRIST DIED FOR SINNERS." And as Christ acted from love, so "all our actions should be prompted by the love of God." Reflect, brethren, "A Christian never says a hurtful thing about His brother from the love of God." "But all wish to be at the feet of each other, and esteem others better than themselves." But on this subject of God's love, I enjoyed most our Bro. L. H. Stuckey's spiritual, experimental and practical words. May our blessed Lord give us all grace to well consider and improve by His earnest appeal and timely exhortation.

Then comes Bro. Webb's humble loving response to Baptist Standard (?) and Bro. Biggs' pointed instructive article against conditional salvation, does not fall below his usual soundness and humility of expression.

Last, but not least, I want to most heartily commend Bro. S. A. Paine's article on the words; "And a man shall be an hiding place from the wind and a covert from the tempest," etc. Our dear brother's words are full of gospel truth, seasoned with grace and affirmed with meekness. May God bless him to most effectually condemn error, simply by affirming the truth in love. The entire article is very edifying, but especially comforting are the words, "The winds may howl and the tempest blow, yet He who has redeemed you and loves you, will gather His sheep in His arms and His-lambs in His bosom and safely secure them from all harm." When I read this and thought of the cold wind and the many temporal and spiritual dangers through life, I rejoiced in our all sufficient Saviour. I was led to consider .the distrustful sin of "life insurance" and "property insurance." My brethren remember, "Cursed be the man that trusteth in man and maketh, flesh His arm," Jer. xvii. 1, 5; v. 7, 17. "Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase, He shall not live." Ezek. xviii. 13. So let u not disobey our God. Let us not look to the vain things of earth for help in natural or spiritual things; but let us look to the Saviour of Sinners as our only refuge. Jesus is our Friend and has all power; let us look to Him to deliver us from all evil. Let us sing with Toplady:

"Rock of ages cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in thee,
Let the water and the blood,
From thy wounded side which flowed.
Be of sin the perfect cure
Save from death and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands,
Can fulfill the law's demands;
Could my zeal no rest e're know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone,
God must save and God alone.

Nothing in my hands I bring,
Simply to thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to thee for dress,
Helpless, come to thee for grace,
Foul, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me Saviour else I die."

Your brother, who would humbly seek refuge in Christ alone, and obey Him from a sense of love.
